Legacy Models: McLaren 650S Can-Am
INSPIRED BY McLAREN'S CAN-AM VICTORIES
The McLaren 650S Can-Am was a special edition to the Super Series range — limited to just 50 examples worldwide. It is arguably one of the most exclusive sports cars in existence and features some special enhancements which mirrored and echoed the excitement and spirit of Canadian American racers.
Originating from the mid ’60s and early ‘70s, the Canadian American Challenge Cup, also known as the ‘Can-Am’, still remains one of the most popular and spectacular motorsports. With no engine restrictions, no minimum weight and radical aerodynamics; the only rules were the cars’ dimensions, minimal safety equipment, the requirement for two seats, and the necessity for enclosed wheels.
This provided engineers with a playground for designing the ultimate racing sports car. McLaren took part in the first ever Can-Am race in 1966 and then went on to dominate the series.
Bruce McLaren, the founder of McLaren, lost his life whilst testing a vehicle for the Can-Am, on 2 June in 1970, aged just 32 years old. However, the McLaren team went on to be victorious in nine out of ten of the Can-Am races that year.
The McLaren 650S Can-Am is a supercar like no other — representing five decades of motorsport success. The McLaren racing model provides the ultimate exhilarating driving experience. The twin-turbocharged V8 engine and carbon-fibre MonoCell partnership is key to the exceptional performance of the 650S Can-Am.
With a top speed of 329kph (204mph), the 650S Can-Am reaches 0-62mph in just 3.0 seconds thanks to the twin turbocharging 3.8-litre V8 engine. It is also surprisingly efficient. Power is enhanced by the 7-speed dual clutch seamless gearbox, which provides almost instant, smooth transitions with a choice of auto, semi-automatic or manual control. The gear shifts auto adapt to the style of driving, too.
Guaranteed to get the best of both worlds, the automatic retractable hard roof combined the refinement of the Coupé with the thrill of the Spider. The roof retracts with the touch of a button in just 17 seconds at speeds of up to 40kph (24mph) for ultimate convenience.
All 650S Can-Am models feature 5- spoke black alloy wheels with silver rim, a retractable hard roof and Airbrake finish to help increase the downforce by up to 20%, finished in carbon fibre.
Lightweight carbon fibre features throughout the vehicle, from the roof to the bonnet and Airbrake, delivering a striking appearance and enhancing the already impressive performance.
The Can-Am is offered in a range of distinctive colours associated with the original Can-Am years. From Onyx Black to Papaya Stark and Mars Red, your 650S Can-Am will certainly not go unnoticed.
The McLaren 650S Can-Am is designed for the uncluttered driver with handcrafted interiors and bespoke interior options to perfectly combine luxury with motorsport racing. All materials are hand-crafted to the highest quality with electric, heated black Nappa leather seats with contrasting Alcantara double stitching throughout the interior, including the door casings.
Unique colour palettes are chosen to complement the Can-Am exteriors — depending on the paint colour you choose will depend on how the interior is finished, whilst Can-Am badging features on the carbon-fibre side sills as subtle but attentive finishing touches.
As with other models in the Super Series range at McLaren, the 650S Can-Am comes equipped with Active Dynamics Panel (ADP) which allows drivers to select the driving mode that suits their preferences. Normal mode is perfect for daily use, balancing comfort and refinement with the same impressive performance. Sport mode allows the 650S Can-Am to become more focused whilst Track mode delivers the most extreme, exhilarating driving experience without compromising on performance, power, comfort, or handling.
As standard, just like other models within the Super Series, the centre console houses all the integrated intelligence, infotainment system and driver controls. Audio systems deliver a surround sound throughout the car, with Meridian audio systems equipped with seven speakers.
